What is vasectomy?

Vasectomy, also known as male sterilisation, is an effective and permanent form of contraception that involves a small operation to divide and seal a section of the tubes which transport semen from the testicles to the penis.

Once the tube connecting each testicle is separated, sperm can no longer get into the semen that is ejaculated during sex and is instead reabsorbed.

This procedure is safer and more effective than female sterilisation.

Why choose to have a vasectomy

Vasectomy is more effective than any other form of contraception. You might be considering a vasectomy if:

  • you have already fathered a child or children and you (and your partner) think your family is now complete
  •  you have decided that you don’t want to be a father
  •  you and your partner have decided that this permanent and highly effective procedure offers the best form of long-term contraception for your relationship

After the procedure

After the procedure it is normal to have some discomfort for a few weeks. Some patients are pain free after a few days.

We will arrange semen testing which will occur 4 months after the procedure and it is important that alternative contraception is used until this date as patients are not sterile immediately after the procedure.

Counselling and preparing for a vasectomy

A consultation is offered prior to the operation date. This is important to explain the procedure, answer questions and ultimately make sure this is right for you.

This happens before the procedure allowing time to consider the discussion before the operation date.

Vasectomy FAQs

We take great care to put you at ease. Like at the dentist, we use local anaesthetic to numb the tissues we operate on. This involves 2 or 3 injections at the start, after this it is only mild pressure and movement that can be felt.

While reversals are available, these are expensive and sometimes do not work. It is best to proceed for a vasectomy whilst considering it as permanent.

After semen testing (done 4 months after the procedure) confirms no active semen, this is considered the most effective form of any contraception available, with chances of pregnancy less than 1 in 2000.

His medical knowledge was very apparent and his diagnosis turned out to be spot on. We will use Dr Clarke going forward and will recommend him to friends in the area.”
